The consumer unit or fuse board is the electrical beating heart of every electrical installation. It is responsible for powering the circuits in a building. All modern consumer units have a main switch, Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and circuit breakers. These are visible as toggle switches on the unit itself.
When it comes to consumer unit replacement, it’s important to note that EXISTING consumer units do not need replacing just because they are old. Age is never a limiting factor. The key limiting factors are safety and performance -- if a consumer unit is deemed unsafe, faulty, or isn’t up to the job, then it needs replacing.
Any electrical work to a consumer unit must be performed by a qualified and competent electrician. Consumer unit replacement is Part P notifiable work, which means you must be certified and qualified to Part P regulations to perform the work.
Our engineers are Part P compliant and Level 3 qualified. You will receive an Electrical Installation Certificate issued by building control within 30 days of replacement, showing the installation as compliant with BS7671.
The average cost to replace a domestic consumer unit is £350 to £450 + VAT. The price depends on the type of consumer unit and the extent of rewiring required (if necessary) to bring the installation in line with building regs.
We will source the correct consumer unit based on your requirements which will be an amendment 3 consumer unit to comply with the latest standards set out in BS7671. These consumer units are easily distinguished by their metal construction (they are metal so as to be non-combustible). Older-style units are plastic.
Our rates are competitive and include initial verification, installation, testing, parts, labour and signing off with building control. The installation will take approximately 2 days, taking into account any bonding upgrades required.
